If you are a bit more savvy on the internet jargon you will know that RSS in print form has something to do with podcasting. Even if you only have a mild appreciation for what RSS is or maybe you have never even heard of it this is the place that you need to be – read on to discover how valuable content is and how it is shared throughout the internet.
RSS is, as you’ve probably guessed, an acronym: it stands for Really Simple Syndication. So what does this mean? At the risk of sounding flip, it’s actually exactly what it sounds like. RSS is what is widely used for the distribution of all different types of content over the internet. This method is used to dispense video audio and text content.
What you’re probably wondering about is how it works. For those of you out there how are turned off by the technical jargon or are not ver technically minded do not panic we really don not need to go there with every minute detail off how it all works for you to benefit from the understanding of RSS.
RSS is actually no different to a subscription of a magazine or daily newspaper. It is the same principle as having your daily newspaper delivered to your door, you have requested this so you do not have to visit the paper shop every day. RSS works much the same. When you subscribe to content via the RSS “feed” (or channel, as they are also called), it is delivered to you rather than your having to remember to visit a particular website to see if new content has been added, download a podcast, etc.
Naturally, web content can’t be tossed onto your doorstep or placed into your actual mailbox. Instead, you’ll need a program called an RSS reader. Your browser may already have this function built in if not there are lots to choose from out there and many are free. When you find content online which is regularly updated, the site owner will often place a RSS feed link on the page – these are those white-on-orange icons which suggest sound coming out of a speaker that you’ve probably seen on quite a few sites.
Depending on what RSS reader you use and how you’ve configured the program, you can either simply click on the RSS feed link to add this channel to your reader or copy and paste the address of the link into your reader. When you have updated your content RSS will notify you this can be automatically downloaded to your podcast.
And that is how RSS really works. It’s a method of content syndication which truly is really simple for both content providers, readers, viewers and listeners. This can be an easy and fun part of building your website thanks to RSS.
