Link Building Mistakes Can Ruin Your Strategy

Posted by GuestPost On June - 6 - 2010

Any online marketer with more than just a little time in the game knows link building is a pretty important part of SEO. The only real issue is getting high quality backlinks from good and relevant websites. Therefore, in a very real way a good link building campaign has its own costs and will consume time. Of course you don’t want to have wasted any time or money, so it’s important to build links with caution to prevent any mistakes. There are mistakes that are easily avoided with the right knowledge and action. So let’s talk more about some common linking errors that only cause issues down the line.

One of the more common mistakes many webmasters make is trying to build backlinks from sites that have no relevance to their own site’s topic. If you’re working on building backlinks, you need to find websites on similar topics or niches to your own. For example, if you have a website that is about gardening, getting backlinks from dating site won’t make sense. Irrelevant links won’t be regarded well by search engines. Yes, it’s not really easy to find good, relevant websites to have your link on, but it’s not impossible either. Regardless of how narrow your own site’s niche might be, there are lots of sites out there that will have some relevance to your topic for link building purposes.

You’ll find sites like these by typing in your keywords into any search engine and then checking the results. Contact the webmasters of those sites and enquire about the possibility of getting a backlink from them. Usually people hesitate to approach site owners and ask for a backlink but it’s one of the most reliable ways to get your link on the most relevant sites. It does take time to contact so many site owners this way, but the results will be worth your effort. Have a little patience and keep contacting the owners of relevant sites, instead of trying to hurry things along with irrelevant sites.

Another comon mistake is approaching a webmaster to add a link for you on a page where there are already plenty of other links. You’ll see far better results getting a link from a page that doesn’t already send out backlinks to hundreds of other sites. Some of these link pages can have 200+ backlinks on them, so putting your link in with them won’t help your efforts much. You might also find sites and directories like this have “nofollow” tags on any non-paid links they add. If there were 200+ links on that page and you could get the webmaster to agree to not add a “nofollow” tag to yours, then it will count.

You’ll make your links more powerful by taking advantage of the suggestions you just read about. These mistakes are easily avoided if you keep them in mind.
